Description

Hojicha is a unique Japanese tea that was originally created in Kyoto about a hundred years ago. It is roasted at high heat in a porcelain pot over charcoal; instead of steamed like most other Japanese teas. This high temperature roasting process produces a lovely reddish-brown coloured leaf and a light toasted, nutty, sweet and slightly caramel-like flavor.

When you open the bag the aroma is similar to toasted rice, sweet, dark, rich, and has herbaceous floral notes. Roasting the leaves creates a tea with a much lower caffeine content than green tea, making hojicha an incredibly popular after dinner tea, or relaxing evening tea.

Its mild flavor makes this brew incredibly complimentary, hojicha truly is a wonderful tea for anytime of the day.

I went for this tea for my evening cup of tea cravings with a little pick-me-up. I should say this is one of my preferred ones in the last order I made. It is has toasty and warm mouth feel yet smooth. The leaves are nicely rolled that a teaspoon full is enough to brew a strong flavor for a cup.

Slightly more roasted flavour than the Miyazaki Hojicha sold here, with less sweetness and leaning heavily towards the nutty palate. nice, yes but not my preferred hojicha. absolutely no issues with the tea itself however.

I know the superior is probably "better" but I much prefer this hojicha for it's savoury richness. The first wash is almost like soup. It survives three washes with the final wash hinting at the qualities of the pre-roasted tea. It's a great all day drinking tea, but it shines with dinner.
